💡 Tip: The 4x Quarts bundle ships without a hazmat fee, making it the most cost-effective option for buyers needing up to 1 gallon.
Common Applications
- Gold & precious metal refining — aqua regia dissolution, parting, and urban mining / PCB board recovery
- Metal cleaning & etching — passivation of stainless steel, surface preparation, and oxide removal
- pH adjustment — lowering pH in industrial water treatment and process chemistry
- Laboratory reagent — digestion of samples, analytical chemistry, and synthesis
- Fertilizer & mineral processing — production of ammonium nitrate and other nitrogen compounds
Aqua Regia Gold Refining Process
Aqua regia is a 1:3 mixture of nitric acid (HNO₃) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) that dissolves gold — something neither acid can do alone.
- Prepare aqua regia: Mix 1 part nitric acid with 3 parts hydrochloric acid in a fume hood.
- Dissolve: Add impure gold. Nitric acid oxidizes gold to Au³⁺; HCl provides Cl⁻ to form soluble chloroauric acid (HAuCl₄).
- Filter: Remove undissolved metals and impurities.
- Precipitate: Add sodium metabisulfite (Na₂S₂O₅) to precipitate pure gold particles.
- Wash & melt: Rinse the gold powder, dry, and melt into bars or granules.
Storage & Handling
- Store in a cool (below 25°C / 77°F), dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight
- Keep containers tightly sealed; nitric acid is hygroscopic and will absorb moisture
- Store away from incompatible materials: organics, flammables, bases (ammonia, caustic soda), and reactive metals
- Use only FLPE, HDPE, or glass containers — never aluminum, copper, or carbon steel
- Shelf life: approximately 1–2 years when stored properly
- Always work in a fume hood or outdoors with adequate ventilation
- Required PPE: acid-resistant gloves, chemical splash goggles, face shield, and acid-resistant apron
Chemical Compatibility
Compatible containers: FLPE (Level 4 Fluorinated Polyethylene), HDPE, borosilicate glass
Incompatible materials (do not mix or store near):
- Organic solvents (acetone, alcohols, ethers) — risk of violent reaction or fire
- Bases and alkalis (ammonia, sodium hydroxide) — exothermic neutralization
- Reactive metals (aluminum, zinc, iron) — generates hydrogen gas and heat
- Reducing agents and flammable materials

Frequently Asked Questions
What container does this ship in?
Quart and gallon sizes ship in Level 4 Fluorinated Polyethylene (FLPE) bottles, which are chemically resistant to nitric acid. The 55-gallon drum ships in an HDPE blue drum.
Is there a hazmat shipping fee?
Yes — nitric acid is a DOT hazardous material (Class 5.1/8, UN 2031). A hazmat fee applies to most sizes. The 4x Quarts (1 gal) bundle is specifically packaged to ship without a hazmat fee.
Can you ship to my state?
We ship to most US states. Some states have restrictions on concentrated acids. If your order cannot be fulfilled to your location, you will be notified promptly. Contact us before ordering if you have concerns.
What is the shelf life?
When stored properly in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible materials, nitric acid has a shelf life of approximately 1–2 years. Always keep containers tightly sealed.
Is this food-safe or USP grade?
No. This is laboratory/technical grade, not food-grade or USP pharmaceutical grade. It is not intended for food contact or consumption.
What PPE is required?
At minimum: acid-resistant gloves (nitrile or neoprene), chemical splash goggles, face shield, and a lab coat or acid-resistant apron. Always work in a fume hood or well-ventilated area. See the SDS for full handling requirements.
Can I use this for hydroponics pH down?
Nitric acid is used industrially for pH adjustment but is extremely concentrated and hazardous. For hydroponic applications, we recommend using a properly diluted, purpose-formulated pH Down product unless you have the appropriate safety training and equipment.
Do you offer a Certificate of Analysis?
Yes — a COA is available for download above and can be provided upon request for every lot.
